Jeju is the one piece of South Korea an Indian passport can reach without a visa, and it is also where an Indian influencer was detained in 2026, and where the Embassy of India in Seoul has issued a formal advisory about refusals. Both facts are true at once, and understanding why is the difference between a smooth arrival and a flight home.

What the waiver actually is

Jeju runs its own entry regime to support island tourism. Under it, Indian passport holders can arrive without a visa, for up to 30 days, for tourism on the island — provided they arrive on a direct international flight into Jeju.

Every clause in that sentence is load-bearing.

Direct means direct. Connect through Incheon or Gimpo and you are at mainland immigration, where an Indian passport needs a visa no matter where you are ultimately going.

The island is the boundary. The waiver ends at Jeju's shoreline. Boarding a domestic flight or ferry to the mainland without a visa is an immigration violation that will be caught at the domestic terminal and will shadow every future Korean application.

Tourism is the purpose. Thirty days, holiday only. Anything that looks like work or a job search is a violation.

Visa-free is not guaranteed entry

This is the part the listicles leave out. A waiver removes the visa requirement; it does not remove the officer. Admission at Jeju is discretionary, arrivals from India have been drawing stricter scrutiny, and the Embassy of India in Seoul has formally advised that travellers have been refused despite the waiver — including cases that made the news.

What separates a short conversation from a refusal is mostly paper:

  • Return ticket, printed

  • Every hotel booking, printed

  • A day-wise itinerary — where you will be, each day

  • Proof of funds for the stay

  • Passport valid six months beyond the trip

Printed is not decoration. Refusals have followed from travellers who had everything on their phone and nothing in their hand. Treat the folder as part of the ticket and the interview becomes a formality.

Who the waiver is actually for

Be honest with yourself about the shape of your trip.

It fits a self-contained Jeju holiday: beaches, Hallasan, the Olle trails, a resort week — flying in and out of Jeju on international services.

It does not fit a Korea trip that happens to include Jeju. If Seoul, Busan or anywhere on the mainland is in the plan, you need the C-3-9 tourist visa anyway — and with it, Jeju is just another domestic flight.

Rules like these move without notice and enforcement moves faster than rules. Check the Korean embassy in India and the Embassy of India in Seoul advisories close to your dates — this page records what was verifiable in October 2026, and the officer at the desk, not this page, decides.
