These three come up in every Seoul search, and they get compared on atmosphere. That is the wrong axis. They are not three flavours of the same stay — they are three different trips, and the right one is decided by where your days will actually happen.
The one-line version
| If your days are… | Stay in |
|---|---|
| Palaces, Bukchon, markets, central sightseeing | Myeongdong |
| Bars, live music, late food, a direct airport train | Hongdae |
| COEX, Apgujeong, Cheongdam, shopping, business | Gangnam |
Myeongdong: the default, and it earns it

Lines 2 and 4, one stop from Seoul Station for the airport train, and the widest spread of hotel prices in the centre. For a first trip, the days happen within twenty minutes of here.
What you give up is quiet and character. The main streets are a tourist corridor, and they are busy every single evening.
Hongdae: the best night, the longest morning

Live music, bars, late food and a young crowd — plus a direct AREX train from Incheon with no transfers, which is worth real money if you arrive late or leave early.
The cost is that the palaces are a ride away, and the noise is genuine. If you plan to be asleep before 2am, check how far your room is from the bar streets.
Gangnam: right for a specific trip, wrong for most first ones
The deepest selection of upscale hotels, the quietest nights of the three, and the only sensible base if your plans are south of the river.
For a standard first-trip itinerary it adds a commute in both directions every day, and the street-level experience is the least interesting of the three.
The mistake to avoid
Picking by vibe. All three are on Line 2 and you can visit the other two whenever you like — the only thing your choice decides is where you are when you are tired. Answer that, and the rest follows.
What is checked here and what is not
Subway lines, walking distances and district character are stable and checked on the date above. Relative price positions hold year-round; absolute rates do not.
