Busan is long and thin. It stretches about 30 km along the coast, the subway runs end to end, and the single biggest mistake first-timers make is booking the wrong end of it — which quietly costs 40 minutes of train twice a day for the whole trip.

So the decision is not really "which hotel". It is which end of the city your days will happen in.

The short version: Seomyeon if you are unsure

Seomyeon sits where Lines 1 and 2 cross. From there, both beaches, the markets, the station and the temples are a single ride with no change. It is also the only central district where prices barely move between August and November.

It gives up the one thing people come to Busan for: you cannot see the sea from it.

Haeundae if the beach is the reason you came

Haeundae is the beach, and the hotels face it. That is the whole argument, and in summer it is a good one. The costs are real though: it is the furthest point from Busan Station, and in July and August both the sand and the rates are at their worst.

Gwangalli is the better-value version of the same idea

One bay west, facing Gwangan Bridge. Smaller beach, better bars, bridge-view rooms at well under Haeundae prices, and noticeably fewer people. If you want a beach base rather than a beach resort, this is the one.

Nampo and Busan Station are the budget answers, for different reasons

Nampo is the old downtown — Jagalchi fish market, Gukje market, Busan Tower, and Gamcheon Culture Village up the hill behind. It is cheaper than either beach and far more atmospheric, but it is on Line 1 only, so Haeundae becomes a long ride with a change.

Busan Station is purely functional. It earns its place by removing two luggage transfers if you are arriving by KTX from Seoul, and by being the cheapest central option. Nothing else recommends it.

Season changes the answer more than anything else

Outside July and August the beach districts drop sharply. Haeundae in October can genuinely cost less than Seomyeon in August. If your dates are flexible, check the beach areas first in the shoulder months and the city areas first in peak summer — that ordering is worth more than any single hotel recommendation.
