Seoul is a one-base city. The subway is fast enough and cheap enough that changing hotels mid-trip costs you more time than it saves, so the decision that actually matters is which district you sleep in for the whole trip.

The short version: Myeongdong unless you have a reason not to

Myeongdong wins on the only two things that compound daily — minutes spent on trains, and how many hotels compete for your booking in that postcode.

How to pick in one pass

  1. Early flight or day trips to other cities? Stay on the AREX line — Seoul Station or Hongdae.

  2. Days mostly palaces and central Seoul? Myeongdong or Jongno.

  3. Days mostly south of the river? Gangnam.

  4. Is nightlife the point? Hongdae.

  5. Everything else equal? Myeongdong.

Seoul Station beats Myeongdong if your trip leaves the city

If your week includes Busan, Gyeongju or an early departure, the station area saves you two luggage transfers per trip.
