Gyeongju was the capital of Silla for a thousand years, and the result is a town where burial mounds sit between ordinary streets. That geography decides the accommodation question: stay where the mounds are.

The short version: downtown, near the tombs

The royal tomb park, Cheomseongdae and Hwangnidan-gil — the café and restaurant street — are all within walking distance of each other. Basing here means the evening is a walk rather than a bus timetable.

Hotels and guesthouses downtown run from simple to mid-range. This is not a luxury-hotel town in the centre.

Bomun Lake is the resort answer, and it is a trade

The larger hotels are out at Bomun Lake. The rooms are better, the setting is calmer, and every single thing you came to Gyeongju for starts with a bus ride.

Right if you are driving and want a comfortable base. Wrong if you are not.

Do not book near Bulguksa

Bulguksa and Seokguram are up the mountain and a trip from anywhere. Visiting them is a half-day outing from any base in town, so proximity to them is not a reason to choose a hotel.

What is checked here and what is not

The layout of the historic centre and the relative positions of Bomun Lake and Bulguksa are stable and are checked on the date above. Train frequencies and bus schedules change — confirm those before planning a tight day trip.
