Three days is the most common first visit and the easiest to ruin by overpacking. This route makes one decision per day — old Seoul, the classic middle, the modern south — and keeps every day inside one part of the city, so the subway carries you between days, not between every stop.
How the three days divide
| Day | Area | The one anchor | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Palaces & old Seoul | Gyeongbokgung at opening | Gwangjang Market |
| 2 | Namsan & Myeongdong | The view from the tower | Hongdae |
| 3 | Gangnam & the river | Bongeunsa against the towers | Han River or DDP |
Each day below has its stops on the map, with the walking order and the notes that matter — opening days, queue timing, what is optional.
Where to base yourself
One hotel, three nights.
The short version: Myeongdong if your evenings are shopping and street food, Hongdae if they are bars and live music — and Hongdae has the direct AREX train from the airport. Gangnam is a fine district and the wrong base for this route; everything on days 1 and 2 sits across the river from it.
Subway: Both bases sit on the lines this route uses — Line 4 and the AREX for Myeongdong, Line 2 and the AREX all-stop for Hongdae
Getting in and out
Arrival day is not day 1. If you land at 3pm, you have an evening, not a day — spend it within ten minutes of the hotel and start the itinerary tomorrow. If you land in the morning, day 1 as written works from about 11am by cutting Insadong short.
If you have to cut something
The palaces day survives everything — it is the reason you came. The honest cut order, from first to last: DDP, the Han River, the tower ascent (keep Namsan's view from the terrace), Insadong. Gwangjang and Gyeongbokgung go last, which is to say never.
After Seoul
Three days in Seoul extends naturally into a week: KTX south, one night in Gyeongju, two in Busan.
